Obituary of Ronald Keith Floyd

Ronald Keith Floyd, 43, of Glastonbury, CT departed this life on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. He was born on July 5, 1980, in Hartford, CT to the late Albert and Sharon (Bingham) Floyd.

Ron was a bright, outgoing child and a voracious reader. He attended school in East Windsor where he participated in the Talented and Gifted Program (TAG), as well as the National Honor Society. He was also a Boy Scout, ultimately reaching the level of Life Scout. Ron had a natural athletic ability and excelled in sports. He loved basketball, played AAU and even served as co-captain of the EWHS team his junior and senior year. Ron also participated in track and field. His main event was shot put and he received recognition for his performance. While attending school Ron worked part-time as a busser at the former landmark restaurant Jonathan Pasco’s, where he would learn about the restaurant business and develop a passion for cooking. He graduated from East Windsor High School, Class of 1998.

After graduation, he attended college at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. While at Seton Hall, Ron continued his participation in track and field. He walked on to the team and participated in shot put and discus events. Ron would later complete his undergraduate studies from Charter Oak State College, achieving high honors with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in General Studies with a concentration in Political Science.

In 2001, Ron joined Kaman Industrial Technologies, Inc. in Windsor, CT as a Purchasing Representative and was later promoted to the role of e-Business Analyst. Ultimately, Ron decided that he wanted to make a career change and applied to the police academy. He joined the Wethersfield Police Department in March 2005. He was a distinguished member of the 305th Basic Training Session at the Connecticut Police Academy (POST) where he graduated first in his class, receiving both the “Chief Luciano Award” and the “TFC. Tuskowski Award” in recognition of his outstanding academic performance, physical wellness scores, driver training and firearms scores, and peer evaluations.

In March 2011, Ron applied for and was appointed to the position of Master Patrol Officer and was later assigned to the MidState Narcotics Task Force. He also served as a member of the Capital Region Emergency Services Team (CREST).

During his time in the Patrol Bureau, Ron was an active officer who received numerous commendations and letters of appreciation from his supervisors and the people he interacted with while on duty. The commendations often described him as a professional, efficient, courteous, excellent, compassionate and heroic officer.

In January 2012, Ron was a selected recipient of the United States Attorney’s Award in recognition of his superior efforts in the investigation and prosecution of a high-level drug trafficking case that resulted in a guilty plea. Ron was a recipient of the WPD Medal of Valor for an officer involved shooting in May 2008 where he and other members of the department demonstrated true courage and professionalism under gunfire. The CPCA Medal of Valor was also awarded to Ron for his actions during that incident.

After sustaining multiple injuries to his knees, which limited his physical ability to meet the challenges of the job, Ron retired from the WPD in 2018.

In 2020, Ron joined Collins Aerospace in Windsor Locks, CT as a Contracts Principal Specialist. As a result of his hard work and dedication, Ron was able to transition into the role of Aftermarket Program Manager in 2022. And in early 2024, he was promoted again and given additional responsibilities. While at Collins, he obtained a Project Management certificate from Cornell University.

Ron’s big personality and infectious laugh touched the lives of all who knew him. He appreciated good food and enjoyed preparing it, usually without a recipe in hand. He had several grills, smokers and special kitchen gadgets. Luckily for his friends and family Ron loved to share and would often invite them over to enjoy his creations. A fan favorite was his famous brisket. He had such a big heart and enjoyed spending time outdoors with his dog Jax, family and friends, especially attending his children’s sporting, drama, dance, and musical events.

From a young age Ron loved the outdoors. He was a skilled fisherman, and he never met a fish he didn’t like. Prior to the complications with his knees, he would love to go fishing with his brother Greg, late father Al, and son Lincoln. More recently, he bonded with his daughter Sienna through their love of shot put; she is a natural just like he was. He also enjoyed kayaking with his children, especially during family trips to Narragansett, RI. His favorite sports teams were the UCONN Huskies Men’s Basketball, Boston Red Sox, and Philadelphia Eagles. And he enjoyed watching big boxing fights with the Ruiz family and would critique them with his brother-in-law Carlos. Above all else, he loved his children Sienna and Lincoln as well as his dog Jax. He truly cherished being their father.

Ron leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved family, daughter Sienna Floyd of Glastonbury, CT; son Lincoln Floyd of Glastonbury, CT; his beloved dog Jax of Glastonbury, CT; mother Sharon Floyd of East Windsor, CT; brother Gregory Floyd (Amy Floyd) of Irvington, NY; sister Kimberly Floyd (Carlos Ruiz) of West Hartford, CT; former girlfriend and mother of his children Julie Grose of Glastonbury, CT; nieces Natalie Ruiz, Adriana Floyd, Madison Floyd, Giavanna Ruiz, and nephew Kairo Ruiz; grandmother Arrie Pearl (Askew) Floyd, Middletown, CT; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
