Bert was a good friend of mine and I truly regret not staying in touch. We sometimes just hung out, we sometimes traveled to places like Providence to sample the night life, Maine (with Bert behind the wheel making record time!), to the New York City Pride March and to Provincetown with that old gang of ours. He was a gentle, uncomplicated person, always embracing you with his beautiful smile no matter what his mood, always there if you needed help. He comfortably wore his heart on his sleeve and it is no wonder he gathered a long list of friends in his lifetime. But as good a friend as he was, he was always looking for more - that special person with whom he could share his life. As shocked and saddened as I am at his passing, I am so happy he found that someone in his life.

Bert first cut my hair in 1976 just after the birth of my second son. I think the shop was in South Windsor. I followed him from shop to shop. Over the years, we shared stories, travels, UConn basketball, and family events. He even cut my mother's hair when when she moved here from Illinois to be closer to me. I just made him promise not to tell her how much I paid for her. She was a child of the Depression and anything over $25 was a lot to her. He was a true friend. I will miss him.

We are still in shock. Bert and I go back to his New Designs Days, probably close to 40 years ago. What a sweet and kind soul he was. No distance was too far for me to travel to see Bert. We talked about our lives as if we were family. Bert will be greatly missed by all the people and lives that he touched. Rest in peace my lovely friend.

My sincerest condolences to Gary and family. Im still in shock that Bert passed away. Bert was so skilled at his craft. I would drive an hour to have him cut my hair and we would conversate about life and he would always tell me about the lifetime movies he watched that were good. In particular, he told me twice about one where theres a spirit on the property that isnt revealed until later in the movie. We would also talk about animals as he always had his beloved girls puppy picture by his chair. I feel strongly, that Berts presence will still be close by because when they pass, its only out of the physical realm. The spirit energy is still very much alive. May Gary and family be able to sense this soon and find some peace.

I was a classmate of Bert at Moscow Elementary School and Valley High High School. We were also neighbors and rode the same bus to school. When I returned to Maine, I learned from Sue and Jim that Bert was in CT and that he had a nice life there. My heartfelt condolences to his husband, his family and his friends.

We are so sorry to learn about Bert’s sudden death. It really is a tragedy that he has passed. I was Bert’s client for 40 years since he started in West Hartford and then my daughter and my mother. We followed him everywhere. He became a friend and we so enjoyed seeing him and sharing in his stories. He even let me bring my dog to the salon to visit( he was a dog lover!) he will be sorely missed by all.
