Obituary of Martha Zink

Martha Bentley Zink, 79, of South Glastonbury, departed this life Thursday February 7, 2013. She was born to the late Paul and Dorothy (Van Dyke) Bentley on Dec. 6, 1933 in Torrington, CT. She was a resident of South Glastonbury, CT for the past 43 years. Martha was an avid lover of gardening and was a long-time member of the Country Gardeners, if it was green and bloomed she loved it. She was a past president of The Federated Women's Club of Glastonbury where she also served as chairman on many committees throughout the years. She was a member of St. Luke's Church Episcopal Women's Club and was known for the herb and garlic cheese balls she donated to the church food sales every year. She belonged to the South Glastonbury Grange where she enjoyed card nights and socializing with her friends. If there had been a Glastonbury Chocolate Lovers club she would have been a member of that, too, as she was an avid if not rabid lover of all things chocolate. She enjoyed travel and was fortunate to have been able to visit China back in the 1980's with her husband, the late J. Malcolm Zink. They went on numerous cruises over the years and enjoyed Hawaii, Mexico, and the US. Many summers were spent at their cottage in New Hampshire, and later, winters in Florida. Martha made many friends everywhere she went. She loved people and entertaining. She often lamented that the guest of honor at post-funeral gatherings was unable to attend, and she determined that she not miss her final party. So this past August, she threw herself a "Pre-Burial Party" to which she invited many of her friends, both old and new, family living in the area, and of course the Mulryans. In addition to her parents and husband Malcolm, Martha was predeceased by her first husband, Charles H. Gleason; her sisters Nancy Hunt and Priscilla M. Booth; and her beloved cat Peter, fondly known as PITA. She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Romanov of South Glastonbury, Stephanie Gleason of San Francisco, and Chris Gleason of South Glastonbury; five step children; Anne Lloyd of NH, Carol Zink of CA, Susan Andricks of NH, Jim Zink of NH, Dorothy Freer of CT; 10 grandchildren Xan and Sasha Romanov, Aja McCarty and Daniel Morgan, Cory and Melanie Lloyd, Katie Hollier and Christine Hime, and Kerry and Kelly Freer; and 6 great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her friends, especially her dear friend Ann Gilnack of Glastonbury. We all wish Martha god-speed and send her our love as she preceeds us on to the next great adventure. A memorial Service will be held Saturday (February 16) at 2:00 PM in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 915 Main Street, South Glastonbury, with the Reverend Marian Stinson officiating. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: HAWKWING, c/o Rochelle Ripley, 306 Cavan Lane, Glastonbury, Ct. 06033.
