Obituary of Douglas F. Allen

Douglas Allen, beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and friend, entered into eternal rest on September 14, 2017 after a brief illness.  He was born in Willimantic to Richard W. and Nellie C. Allen and resided in Glastonbury for most of his life.  He was a devoted husband, proud father and “even prouder” grandfather. Doug graduated from Glastonbury High School in 1953 and attended the UCONN School of Agriculture in Storrs.  During high school, Doug played on the soccer, basketball and baseball teams.  He was a member of the UCONN soccer team from 1954-1956 and was captain in 1956.  Later, he played in various local men’s softball leagues and enjoyed duckpin bowling.  Doug was active in Glastonbury Future Farmers of America and Vocational Agriculture, having received several national poultry judging awards.  He continued on with his passion for poultry throughout his collegiate career.  In 1957, he was selected by the Connecticut Poultry Improvement Association to perform flock selection work in accordance with the National Poultry and Turkey Improvement Plans. He worked for Arbor Acres Farm Inc for many years as a Research Supervisor, retiring in 1996. Doug was a very intelligent man who loved stimulating conversation on all topics. His quick wit and vibrant personality will be sadly missed.  He enjoyed country music, the Boston Red Sox and UCONN sports, especially women’s basketball.  He loved having a vegetable garden every year and took great pride in maintaining his yard. He was a member of the Glastonbury Lodge of Elks # 2202 and the John Tom Hill Community Club. Doug is survived by his wife Dorothy Allen, daughter Brenda Eighmey-McLea, son Dale Allen, daughter-in-law Barbara Allen, and granddaughters Victoria and Catherine Allen.  In addition to his parents, Doug was predeceased by his son-in-law Craig McLea and his sister Charlotte Taylor. Calling hours will be on Sunday, 9/17/17 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury.  A graveside service will be private and at the convenience of the family.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
