Obituary of The Honorable George W. Ripley II

The Honorable George W. Ripley II January 10, 1926 – May 27, 2016 Resided in Shelton, Connecticut The Honorable George W. Ripley II, retired Superior Court Judge, died Friday, May 27, 2016 at the Masonicare Health Center hospice in the presence of his beloved wife, Madeline. Judge Ripley was born in Hartford, Connecticut, January 10, 1926, son of the late Charles W. Ripley and Althea Butler Ripley. He attended Glastonbury public schools and graduated from Glastonbury High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II (1944-1946) and was stationed in Guam – Pacific Theatre with the Seabees. He was awarded the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, and Victory Medal. He received his B.A. from the University of Connecticut (1950) and LL.B. from the University of Connecticut School of Law (1955). He was admitted to the Connecticut bar in 1955 and practiced law in the Hartford area from 1955-1981 before being appointed as a Judge of the Superior Court by Governor William A. O’Neill. He served in that capacity until 1996, at which time he became a State Referee and held that position until his retirement in 2013. During his thirty-two years of service as a Superior Court Judge and a State Referee, he sat in many courthouses around the state handling criminal and civil matters. Judge Ripley’s public service included appointment as a Deputy Judge and, subsequently, Prosecuting Attorney in the Glastonbury Town Court in the late 1950s. He was also a member of the Glastonbury Sewer Commission (1961-1963) and served three terms on the Glastonbury Town Council (1963-1965, 1965-1967, and 1979-1981). He was President of the Glastonbury Hills Country Club (1968-1970) and member of the Board of Governors of the Newtown Country Club (1999-2001). Additionally, he was also a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Connecticut Forest and Park Association. Judge Ripley was a member of the First Church of Christ in Glastonbury and the First Congregational Church of Stratford for many years. He was predeceased by his wife of over 40 years, Anna May Eklund of Fairfield, Connecticut, his brother, Butler L. Ripley, and his grandson, Christopher J. Ripley. He is survived by his wife of over 25 years, Madeline Pinto Ripley of Shelton, Connecticut. He is also survived by his children, George W. Ripley III and his wife Phyllis, of Glastonbury, Connecticut and Barbara G. Ripley and her husband, Charles Daghlian of Montpelier, Vermont and his step children, Robin Romanovsky and her husband Gregory of Derby, Connecticut, Richard Pinto and his wife Sara of Jacksonville, Florida, and Paul Pinto and his wife Andrea of Easton, Connecticut, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Friends are invited to visit with Judge Ripley’s family from 4-7 pm on Thursday, June 9 at the Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury, Connecticut. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 11 at 10 am, at the First Congregational Church of Stratford, 2301 Main Street, Stratford, Connecticut.
