Obituary of Mary L. Carroll

Mary L. (Knowles) Carroll, 89, of Glastonbury, wife of the late Robert P. Carroll, died Friday May 27, 2016 at Hartford Hospital. Born July 13, 1926 in Portland, ME, daughter of the late Frederick and Nellie (Palmer) Knowles. Mary grew up in Portland, ME, and graduated from Deering High School and attended Westbrook Jr. College. After she moved to New York City to work for Travelers, she met her husband, Robert. They started their family in Brooklyn, NY, and moved to NJ and PA before settling in Glastonbury in 1969. Mary was a true Mainer. She spent her summers at Little Sebago Lake at the “camp”, where she became an avid water skier, swimmer and fisherwoman. She loved to share many camp memories, including swimming across the lake with her Dad alongside in a safety boat. She also enjoyed downhill skiing and tennis. She loved to garden, and did a lot of canning, making many varieties of jams and jellies every year which she shared with all. Mary loved to sit and talk with her husband while watching the birds at the feeder. Mary was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and the matriarch of the family. She always had plenty of food for whoever stopped by and never ran out of brownies or cake. She loved to cook for her family and Sunday and holiday dinners were very important to her. She is survived by 2 sons and their wives, James and Maureen Carroll of Andover, David and Debbie Carroll of Glastonbury, 2 daughters, Louise Carroll of Glastonbury, Nancy Peters and her husband Brad of Glastonbury and 7 grandchildren, Elaine Carroll, Edward Carroll, Andrew Martin, Robert Carroll, Christopher Peters, Scott Peters and William Peters. She will be greatly missed by all. As per the family’s request service will be private. For online condolences visit www.mulryanfh.com.
