Obituary of Dr. Lee Wallace Dean, III

Dr. Lee Wallace (Wally) Dean III, of Glastonbury, passed away peacefully in the presence of family on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 15, 1932, son of the late Dr. Lee Wallace Dean, Jr. and Dr.Sara McGarvey Dean. Wally graduated from Amherst College in 1954 and obtained a Doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Physics in 1960. Ne was a Professor of Physics at MIT until 1967 when he moved his family to Glastonbury. He worked at Pratt and Whitney aircraft in Hartford until his retirement and published several scientific articles on the acoustics of aircraft engines and is an inventor on multiple patents concerning sound reduction materials for jet engines. Wally was an avid stamp collector and a world expert on the stamps and postal marking of Haiti. He won several medals for his Haitian stamp exhibits and was judge for national and international philatelic associations. He is survived by his wife Geraldine, sons Michael and David and daughters Carol Dean, Candle French and her husband Tom and Jessica Fitzgerald; his sister Linda Fields, grandchildren Jason Rich, Stephen Dean, Jonathan Dean, Jeffrey Dean, Aaron Dean, Tom Dean, Sarah French, Christopher French, Erin Fitzgerald, Julie Fitzgerald, Serdar Gümüştel, Derya Gümüştel, and Laura Dean and great-grandchildren Isaac Rich, Claire Rich, Katherine Dean and Elizabeth Dean. He was predeceased by his sister Eleanor and a brother Dr. David McGarvey Dean. Friends may call at the Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury on Saturday May 7th from 3-5 PM.
