Obituary of Donald Kevin Cody

Donald Kevin Cody, 84, beloved husband of Anne Elizabeth (Landwehrle) Cody, died peacefully on November 1, 2015. Don was born on March 3, 1931, to the late Alfred Francis Cody and Kathryn (Berry) Cody. He was predeceased by a sister Maureen, in childhood. Don was raised in Yonkers, NY, and was the valedictorian of the All Hallows High School Class of 1949. After enrolling at Manhattan College, he spent two years of active duty service in the Army National Guard stationed at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island. He then returned to college, graduating from Fordham University in 1955. In June of 1955 Don and Anne were married and began their life together. After finding his calling for teaching, Don went on to obtain a Masters degree from New York University and a Doctoral degree in education from Columbia University Teachers College. He taught History and English for 11 years at Irvington (NY) High School where he made many lifelong friends among the students, faculty and administration. Don began teaching at the City College of New York in 1967, where he taught for 25 years before retiring as a Professor Emeritus in 1992. While at CCNY, he chaired the Education Department and later served as Associate Dean. His great love was teaching methods classes for aspiring social studies teachers, including supervising student teachers throughout the public schools of New York City. Don was proud to take a leadership role in the early years of the A. Philip Randolph Campus High School, a collaboration of the New York City school system and CCNY with the goal of preparing students for college. In retirement, Don greatly enjoyed travel and golf with Anne. Favorite destinations over the years included The Reefs in Bermuda, St. Augustine, FL, and Manchester, VT. Don was grateful for his friendships with Father George Couturier, formerly of St. Dunstan Church in Glastonbury, and Father Dominic Valla of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Oxford, CT. Don will long be remembered for his engaged approach to life and his keen interest in all aspects of public affairs. Not a day went by that he did not read the New York Times from cover to cover. He cherished time spent with family and friends, but especially with his two adored grandsons, thoroughly enjoying his active role in their lives. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Anne, son Thomas and daughter-in-law Mary Ellen, and grandsons Patrick and Kevin Cody, all of Glastonbury. Don also leaves behind two special brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Janice and Robert Rueppel, and Susan and Richard Landwehrle, as well as 9 much-loved nieces and nephews and their 18 children. Calling hours will be held on November 5, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Dunstan Church, 1345 Manchester Road, Glastonbury, on November 6 at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY.
