Obituary of Madeline Travers

Madeline E. Travers (Exharhou), 90 of Glastonbury Connecticut, formerly of East Hartford and of Queens New York City died peacefully on Tuesday October 28, 2014 at her apartment home at Emeritus Buckingham Estates. Madeline was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 10, 1924. Madeline was a happy and very religious person who loved her family and friends. She embodied the attributes of the Greatest Generation. A patriot who joined the Red Cross making bandages in response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. She worked for J.C Penney for more than 25 years. She started at the head office on West 34th street in Manhattan. She completed her career as a transportation coordinator in Penney's warehouse facility in Manchester, CT. She married Hugh F. Travers, a Navy Seabee on August 10, 1943. They were married for 55 years. She leaves a daughter, Susan T. Sposito and Susan's husband Peter J. Sposito of Glastonbury. Her four married grandchildren Marybeth and Douglas Murdoch, Joseph and Nona Sposito, David and Kelly Sposito and Michael and Christine Sposito shared with her 10 great grandchildren: Mellissa, Brian, Mary, Matthew, Peter, Claire, Lucy, Henry, Michael and Benjamin. Madeline, stricken with dementia, lived in the moment. She spoke lovingly of her daughter who was constantly at her side. She loved rides in the car during her favorite season when she looked in awe at the beauty of the trees. "Nana" spoke with pride about her grandchildren saying often: I have two teachers, an accountant and an engineer. Her famous saying was "…. God willing" was applied to any situation that was beyond mortal control. A realist, she did whatever had to be done, a trait shared by many of her friends and family. An avid reader, she read the newspaper diligently often on the front porch where she enjoyed a close-up view of, in her mind, a beautiful world. The family thanks the dedicated caretakers who grew to love her at Buckingham Estates. They provided an active litany of activities of which she took part. She was often pictured in that community's newsletter as an enthusiastic participant. The family has planned a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday on All Saints Day, November 1st at Saint Dunstan Church, 1345 Manchester Rd, Glastonbury, followed by internment in the Veteran's section of the Hillside Cemetery in East Hartford. Madeline will be waked on Friday evening, October 31, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury, CT 06033. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Madeline's favorite, St. Anthony: Franciscan Mission Associates, P.O. Box 598, Mount Vernon, New York 10551-0598.
