Obituary of Donald Donovan

Donald William Donovan, 94, of Glastonbury, passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 11, 2014 at Glastonbury Health Care Center. The loving husband to Lillian (Lil) Washburn Donovan of 60 years. Donald was born May 28, 1920 in Waterbury, VT, to William and Christine (Michaud) Donovan. Donald served in the US Army during WW II. Following his discharge from the Army, Donald's career as a Design Engineer allowed him to work for various companies including, Monsanto and Glass Container Corporation from which he retired in 1985. Donald was a kind and caring person, who always had something good to say about everyone. He was a member of St. Dunstan's Church where he also taught CCD for many years. Donald loved golfing and bowling. He also loved to play bridge and pinochle and loved to watch sports on television, especially his Yankee's baseball. One of Donald's favorite pastimes was listening to and recording Jazz music. After meeting Lillian in 1953 in Canada, he loved his return trips to New Brunswick Canada every summer with Lil and his children. Donald is predeceased by his sister Charlotte Maire of Massachusetts. He leaves behind his loving wife Lillian, daughters Lori Donovan of Manchester and Jamie (Donovan) DiGiovanni and partner Jesse David Burton of Glastonbury. He also leaves his grandchildren, Craig DiGiovanni of Watertown, MA., and Katie DiGiovanni of Somerville, MA. Donald also leaves his extended family members, sisters-in-law, Grace (Washburn) Cook of St. Johns Newfoundland, Canada, Betty Washburn, Monica Washburn and Gladys Washburn all from New Brunswick, Canada and Helen Barlow of Burlington, CT., brothers-in-law Joseph Murphy of Rocky Hill and Robert Washburn of New Brunswick, Canada. Donald also leaves many nieces and nephews. Donald also leaves his lifetime friend Hank Smachetti of Simsbury, CT. The family has requested a private service at Mulryan Funeral Home, Glastonbury. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in his honor may be made to the Glastonbury Health Care Center, Recreation Dept.,1175 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury, CT. 06033.
