Obituary of Warren Able

Warren F. Able, 82, of Ft. Myers, FL. and Marlborough, CT., beloved husband of Patricia (Madden) Able, died Monday May 26, 2014 at the Heartland Health Care Center in Fort Myers, FL. Born June 17, 1931 in Valparaiso, Indiana, son of the late Edward and Olga (Ruehl) he had lived in Ft. Myers for the past 22 winters. Prior to his retirement he was an engineer for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, CT. He was a graduate of Purdue University and had served in the U.S. Air Force in Alaska where he met his wife. In high school he broke the State of Indiana Indoor Quarter Mile track & field record in 1949. He took up serious bicycle riding in mid-life and rode 285,000 miles in 35 years. He was an Olympic torch bearer representing Fort Myers in the run to the winter 2002 games in Salt Lake City. In 1994 and 1996 he won 4 gold medals at the Maine Senior Games bicycle riding. In early retirement Warren and Patricia resided in York Beach, Maine. In addition to his wife of 58 years, survivors include 2 sons Edward and John, 2 daughters-in-law Darlene and Eileen, and 2 granddaughters, Colleen and Emma of Hartford, CT. Friends are invited to visiting hours Monday, June 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. and a funeral service Tuesday, June 3 at 11 a.m. at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury, CT followed by burial at Green Cemetery, Glastonbury with full military honors.
