Obituary of Walter Varni
Walter C. (Cricky) Varni 68, of South Glastonbury, Englewood, FL and Lakeview Plantation, ME, passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 15, 2013. He was the proud owner of Fairway Landscapers Inc, and Varnbrook Nursery. He participated in the construction and reconstruction of many golf courses in the New England area including the T.P.C., Portland Golf Course and Rockledge to name a few. He was particularly proud of the many athletic fields he built in this area. Cricky was a member of numerous organizations. These include the Connecticut Arborists Association, Connecticut Golf Course Association, Connecticut Grounds Keeper Association, Connecticut Farm Bureau, Future Farmers of America, the N.R.A., the Property Owners Club and Matson Hill Club of South Glastonbury and the Glastonbury Rotary Club. Cricky proudly served his country for 23 years in the U.S Army and Reserves retiring in 2005 as a Chief Warrant Officer. He enjoyed returning to his family's roots in Italy. Cricky found the most enjoyment in his life being with Sharon and Keith at their beautiful home on the lake in Maine and he was so looking forward to spending his golden years with them in Florida. Cricky is survived by his best friend and wife of 45 years, Sharon his devoted son Keith and his brother David and his wife Marge and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Louis and Dorothy Varni and his brother Richard. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday Dec. 21, at 10am in St. Augustine Church, 55 Hopewell Rd., South Glastonbury. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Augustine Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center, UCONN Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington, CT. 06030 or to the Hoffman Heart and Vascular Institute, St. Francis Medical Center. 114 Woodland St., Hartford, CT. 06105.
