Obituary of Warren B. Russell

Warren B. Russell passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025, and joins his beloved wife, Barbara, for eternity. Warren was born in Chicago, IL in 1930 to Trafton and Florence Russell. The family moved several times and settled in Silver Spring, MD, where he graduated from Montgomery Blair High School and Montgomery Junior College, going on to study engineering at Johns Hopkins University’s night school. He met Barbara, the love of his life, in Washington, DC, and they married in 1967. The couple and their two daughters eventually relocated to Glastonbury, CT. They enjoyed nearly 55 joyous years together raising a family and ultimately retiring to Sarasota, FL.

Warren was a very proud United States Marine, having honorably served in the Korean War. Later in life, he enjoyed regular lunches with fellow Marines. Warren started his career with Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company in design engineering and retired from Sundstrand Corporation (now RTX) with a distinguished career as a Regional Director. During his daughters’ school years, Warren taught Sunday school at Buckingham and South Congregational Churches, enjoyed family vacations on the Cape and various tropical islands, and treasured time nurturing his family.

Upon retirement, Warren consulted in aerospace and spent most of those thirty years volunteering with various organizations such as the Sarasota Blood Bank and the Ringling Museum of Art.  He delivered dinners with Meals on Wheels often serving community members much younger than he. Warren spent years volunteering at the Pelican Man’s Bird Sanctuary, driving the rescue truck and getting himself into some tricky situations with pelicans and other birds and small critters. Barbara and his family were endlessly entertained by his adventures. Warren also enjoyed traveling, sailing with dear friends, and serving on the Palisades Board.

Warren treasured a good book and was a lifelong learner. In between books, he would turn his attention to old encyclopedias, National Geographic, and Marine’s Leatherneck magazines. His family enjoyed touching as well as amusing stories from his youth. He would fondly speak of his high school buddies, summers in Kennebunk Maine, his years as a Marine, and experiences on countless jobs such as his work on sod farms and selling newspapers in Washington, DC, on VJ Day.

Warren was a humble, selfless man, always putting others’ needs first. He was a strong believer in the virtue of hard work and could be heard telling his daughters, with love, to pull themselves up by their bootstraps during challenging times. He touched all who he met and will be remembered for his gentle, giving nature. Most recently, he returned to CT to be close to his daughter’s family which brought him and the family much joy and cherished memories.

Warren is survived by his daughter, Christine Korper (David) of Glastonbury; loving grandchildren, Emily and Owen Korper; brother-in-law, Greg Meehan of Wisconsin; and niece, Ann Meehan of Minnesota. His daughter, Deborah Abosheta of New York, predeceased Warren. Memorial services will be held in Sarasota at a future date.
