Obituary of Margaret-Ann Dill
Margaret-Ann Dill, 79, beloved wife, mother, friend & neighbor, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly at home on Monday, August 19.
Daughter of the late Stephen and Helen Goyena, Marge was born in New Jersey on July 7, 1945. She graduated from Douglass College at Rutgers University where she met her husband Michael John Dill. They married in 1967. She later earned her MA from Eastern Connecticut State University.
A Hebron resident for 50 years, Marge worked passionately as a homemaker, teacher, and reporter. Early on, she taught K-12 substitute and special classes in Hebron and Bolton. As the local correspondent for the Rivereast News Bulletin she covered Hebron news for decades, authoring countless articles about the town and its people. In later years she taught English as a second language at Manchester Community College.
Endlessly curious about people and cultures, Marge travelled the world with her partner-in-adventure, Michael, starting in Germany as a young Army wife. She initiated numerous explorations—from touring Morocco in the family station wagon with two kids in tow, to hiking Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands—pairing her bright sparks of inspiration with Mike’s pragmatic “get it done” approach.
Closer to home, she enjoyed the beaches and tidal creeks of Cape Cod; watching full moons; introducing friends to her favorite books, restaurants, and cultural institutions; and riding the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry. She loved a good storm, and the snow, and tramping through the woods in snowshoes, on skis and on foot. And talking—to anyone and everyone.
Marge was a ribbon-winning gardener, a wide-ranging reader, and an enthusiastic observer of nature. She was a lover of diverse foods and appreciated cultures and traditions beyond her own. She was as likely to light a lamp for Diwali as she was to attend mass at Easter.
She was known among friends and family for her many personal acts of kindness and always had on hand a supply of gift and note cards and a list of birthdays and special dates. Fiercely independent yet blessed with many helpers, she lived life on her own terms. She will be missed dearly.
Marge is survived by her sons Brian and Jeffrey, granddaughter Sylvie, and other extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Steven, and her husband Michael, who was the love of her life.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, Sept. 13 from 5-7 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Family, 185 Church St., Hebron. Services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, 30 Church St., Hebron, followed by burial at Gilead Cemetery, 636 Gilead St., Hebron.
