Obituary of Frances M. Atwater
Frances (Honey) Atwater of South Windsor, CT, beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin and Friend, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on June 4, 2024 at the age of 91. Born on April 28, 1933, in Hartford, CT, she was the daughter of the late John and Carmel (Tremont) Maher. Her life was a testament of devotion to her family and her faith.
Frances was the beloved wife of the late Maxwell James Atwater, with whom she raised a beautiful family and shared a lifetime of memories. Her legacy continues through her daughter Apryl and her husband James Hamilton of San Antonio, Florida, son Matthew Atwater of Baltimore, Maryland, daughter Jessica Foley, with who she made her home, and her partner James Pastula of South Windsor, CT, her four treasured grandchildren Emily Hamilton and partner Ryan McCarthy and his daughter Brooklyn, Joseph Hamilton and wife Molly, Mitchell Foley, Michael Foley, a great-granddaughter Rory J. Hamilton, a niece Palma Lavigne who she considered as a daughter, many local cousins, lifelong friends Mary Ann Pressmarita and Dawn Leto, and numerous “adopted grandchildren” that were welcomed into her home. All of whom will forever hold her in their hearts. Frances was also predeceased by her son in law Steven Foley and her sister Jacquelyn (Maher) Mittica.
Earlier in life, Frances worked at the Southern New England Telephone Company, Karen Associates, and Sodexo Marriot. She was dedicated to excellence in the performance of any task she undertook. At the age of 11, Frances survived the infamous 1944 Hartford circus fire in company with her young sister.
Throughout her life, Frances was a selfless woman who dedicated herself to her family. She was delightfully straightforward with her thoughts and many of her infamous quotes will live on with us forever. Years ago, in her final instructions, she wrote, “Be happy not sad. You know how I’ll hate to go and will miss you all so very much. Love always, Mom”
Frances was pillar of strength and compassion, always putting the needs of others before her own. She served as a quiet example of humility, grace and resilience. Her presence was a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew her.
