Obituary of Robert D. Shannon

Robert Shannon, beloved husband of Janet (House) Shannon for nearly 60 years, passed away peacefully on Nov 21, 2023, surrounded by his family.  He was 80 years old.

Born on July 26, 1943, in Hartford, CT, to R. Gilbert and Viola (Decker) Shannon, Robert was a lifelong resident of Glastonbury. He was a graduate of Glastonbury High School and served in the Air National Guard before embarking on a distinguished 25-year career with the I B Moore Corporation. His work, which led him to international locales like Malaysia, culminated in his leadership of the company's U.S. Division. Following his tenure at I B Moore, Robert's entrepreneurial spirit shone through as he successfully founded and ran his own rubber business for the next 30 years. Robert's true passion was boating, and his favorite place was Mystic.  He built his first boat in his parents' basement and graduated over the decades to captain boats that could accommodate his growing family and golden retrievers.  He cherished the moments cruising Long Island Sound, voyaging to destinations like Montauk, Block Island, and Watch Hill.  In recent years, alongside his beloved wife Janet, he relished the serenity of the Mystic River.  With pride and joy, he watched his children and grandchildren fish, swim, and cruise around the place that he so loved.

Robert's memory will be cherished by all who were touched by his simple kindness.  He will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Janet; daughter, Lisa Shannon Nolt and her fiancé Bob DeVito of Hebron; son, Mike Shannon and his wife Jen of Glastonbury; brother, Roy Shannon and his wife Pam of Glastonbury; sister-in-law, Sally Riddell of Glastonbury; and his adored grandchildren, Allison, Ryan, Luke, Tommy, and Zach, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on December 4, 2023 at 10:00 AM at the First Church of Christ, 2183 Main St., Glastonbury. A burial at the Green Cemetery will follow. Calling hours are scheduled at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave, on Sunday, December 3, 2023 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Robert's honor to the First Church of Christ’s Children’s Mission Project https://www.glastonburyfirst.org/mission-project.
