Obituary of Paul Francis Sullivan

Paul Francis Sullivan, aged 70, of South Glastonbury, CT, embarked on his peaceful journey onwards on July 5, 2023. By his side, providing comfort and love throughout his brave battle with brain cancer, was Brenda J. (LeMar) Sullivan, his cherished wife of 31 years. 

Born to Francis and Irene (Matroni) Sullivan in Windsor Locks, CT, Paul leaves a legacy carried forward by his son, Daniel J. Sullivan, of Dallas, Texas. He forever holds in his heart his dear daughter, Kathryn Anne Sullivan, whose premature departure on March 20, 2023, left an indelible imprint on their family.

A Boston College alumnus of 1975, Paul devoted 46 years to the worker's compensation insurance claims industry, concluding his career at Smith Brother's Insurance Agency in Glastonbury, CT, in November 2022.

A devoted steward of the earth, Paul's passion for gardening saw him devote countless hours tending to his flowers, trees, and shrubs, forming a sanctuary in his own backyard. This passion extended to his role as an avid hiker and committed conservationist, finding solace, joy, and purpose on the trail.

Embodying boundless generosity, Paul was known for his commitment to charitable causes. From serving meals in Hartford's soup kitchens to supporting various charity projects at Smith Brothers, Paul's kindness knew no bounds. His dedication to his church, Saint Dunstan's, saw him lend his hands to countless cleanup initiatives over the decades.

Beyond these charitable endeavors, Paul also mentored young athletes as a little league and soccer coach, a role made even more special as it allowed him to guide his son, Daniel.

Paul's life was greatly defined by his unconditional love for his children. His bond with his son, Daniel, was fortified through shared travels, a love of sports in the stands and on the field, and an affinity for all kinds of banter. The love for his daughter, Katie, shone through their cherished walks, tender cuddles, and their shared delight in bedtime stories—often animated by Paul's captivating character—bringing laughter and joy into their lives. Paul's love and devotion as a father endure in his children's hearts.

Known for his deadpan humor and dry wit, Paul was a source of humor to all those who knew him.  His unique ability to lighten tense moments with humor has left behind cherished memories among his loved ones, friends, and work colleagues.

As a passionate sports enthusiast, Paul's love for the Boston Red Sox knew no bounds. Whether from a living room or amidst the cozy confines of Fenway Park, he and Daniel shared this passion. Together, they created lasting memories at UConn Men’s and Women's Basketball games, National Championship runs and religiously read the newspaper and box scores.

Travel was another cherished aspect of Paul's life. He found joy in planning domestic and international adventures with Brenda. As a dedicated member of the Meshomasic Hiking Club, he anticipated joining the 1000 hike ranks upon retirement.

Paul's pursuit of discovering new handicapped-accessible hiking trails, a testament to his love for his daughter, Katie, and the great outdoors, remains a poignant part of his legacy. His dedication ensures that others can enjoy nature's tranquility as he did.

Paul's legacy is lovingly remembered by his wife, Brenda, son Daniel, close friends, and colleagues. His beloved cousins, Gary and Barbara Johnson of Rowayton, CT; Lydia and Larry Gallant of West Springfield, MA; Samuel and Susan Flanders of Durham, New Hampshire; Robert and Tracy Johnson of Sapphire, North Carolina, and Richard and Linda Hensel of Broad Brook, CT.

On behalf of Brenda and Daniel, we extend our profound gratitude to the dedicated medical team who provided unparalleled care and support during Paul's illness. This includes the professionals at the UConn Neag Comprehensive Cancer, Dr. Kevin Becker's medical team, Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute, Dr. Ritter's and Dr. Schwartz's team, and the compassionate individuals at Hartford Hospital Hospice and Interim HealthCare of Hartford.

Indeed, special recognition goes to Paul's hospice nurse aide, Andrea. Her display of exemplary kindness and professionalism in her duties was nothing short of exceptional. We also want to acknowledge our dear friend, George Sercombe. From the moment George learned of Paul's condition, he was there daily checking in offering support until the very end. Brenda could not have made it without his help.

We're profoundly grateful for the additional friends, neighbors, and family members who rallied around us in our hour of need. The love, strength, and care you demonstrated are etched in our hearts. Without these extraordinary individuals, managing Paul's care would have been an overwhelming task. The unwavering commitment, compassion, and support we received are deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten.

Friends and family are warmly invited to celebrate Paul's remarkable life. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury. On Thursday, July 13, 2023 there will be a funeral Mass at Saint Dunstan’s Catholic Church, 1345 Manchester Road, Glastonbury at 10:00 am, followed by a graveside burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, 17 Wickham Road, Glastonbury.
