Obituary of William P. Haas

William “Bill” P. Haas, of Glastonbury passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at Hartford Hospital.

Son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Ryan) Haas, Bill was born in Union, NJ. After living in Newport for many years he moved to Glastonbury, CT to be closer to family.

He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife Pauline (Burke) and siblings Joseph, Paul, Dolores, and Margaret. Bill left this world on his terms, thoughtfully, quickly, and with the certainty of eternal life to come. His unwavering faith was an inspiration.

Bill the teacher taught philosophy at Emanuel College, Notre Dame University, Purdue University, Providence College, Salve Regina University and Bryant University. He enjoyed the interactions with his students and developed life-long relationships with many of them. The teacher and students challenged and inspired each other.

Bill the artist conveyed his love of God and faith through painting and sculpture. He used simple concepts that told the story of Christ’s infinite love. He communicated through art what could not be fully captured in words. His art will communicate long after his passing.

Bill the husband married Pauline Burke after spending 20 years as a Roman Catholic priest. He was called to become closer to God through his marriage. Pauline was the joy and love of his life. They traveled the world together sharing their interests in art, music, history, and deep faith.

Bill was a leader. He was the former President of Providence College and North Adams State University. Late in life he donated to charities that focused on helping people who were less fortunate. He always insisted that funds be used to provide immediate assistance; Bill wanted to have an impact and his family appreciates the example he provided.

A note he wrote and kept in his wallet reveals his deep faith: “Ask and it will be given to you. Search and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened.”

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 19, 2023 at 10:30 am at Ss. Isidore and Maria Parish in St. Paul Church, 2577 Main St., Glastonbury, CT. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call on Friday, May 19, 2023 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury, CT.
