Obituary of Joseph Hebenstreit

Joseph (Joe) Hebenstreit, Jr., 92, died peacefully at Hartford Hospital on the afternoon of May 9, 2013. Joe was a longtime resident of Glastonbury. He was born April 29, 1921 in Willimantic, Connecticut and was the last surviving child of Joseph Andrew and Eleanor Capitola (Spencer) Hebenstreit. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Kathlin (Read) Hebenstreit, his brothers Clarence and William Hebenstreit, and his sister Eleanor (Hebenstreit) Wilson. He is survived by his daughters Linda Hebenstreit of Glastonbury, Diane Hebenstreit of West Hartford, Christine Price and her husband Charles of Floral City, FL, and Barbara Rossitto and her husband Sebastian of Wethersfield; five grandchildren, Jason Lynd and Aaron Lynd, Christopher Wickstrom, Jennifer Johns, and Joseph Rossitto; and four great grandchildren, Jennifer and Dominic Lynd and Scarlett and Asher Wickstrom. Joe served in the US Army Air Force during WWII. He had a long career as a tool engineer with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and upon his retirement continued to consult for the industry well into his seventies. Joe had a lifelong love of aircraft and had his pilot's license. He was a family man who enjoyed skiing in the winter and the beach in the summer. If family or friends needed anything he was there, starting cars, shoveling snow, picking up grandchildren from school, or transporting and feeding church missionaries. He stayed physically active, walking every morning and doing his own yard chores. Joe was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on December 9, 1984 and faithfully served in a number of church callings through the years. He was honest, dependable, and abstained from alcohol and cigarettes, to which he attributed his longevity. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 14, at 11am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 30 Woodside Street, Manchester. Joseph will be interred with full military honors in the Green Cemetery in Glastonbury. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the humanitarian fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Palliative Care Unit of Hartford Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
