Jay was a volunteer at Birthright of Greater Hartford, Inc. for 13 years. She was wonderful and caring and a great friend. I will miss her. I wasn't able to find her this past year to visit since she had been moved to another home.
At Birthright I was able to dictate letters since Jay knew short hand. She would then type up the letters and send them out after I signed. She worked with another volunteer Toni for many years to open the mail and process checks from our donors.
I had four children at home and I remember coming home one day and talking about Jay and Toni at dinner. I had done this before but this time something tipped off my children that Jay and Toni were women. Before that they thought they were men. For some reason I really got a kick out of this.
Jay sold me her Honda Civic when she was diagnosed with macular degeneration and announced she wouldn't be able to come in to volunteer anymore. It was very low mileage. My daughter now drives it and it's up to 195,000 miles.
When my twin grandsons were born, Jay came to my home for a visit and held them. They were very tiny. I know she enjoyed how precious they were.

Jay was John Murtha's secretary at Murtha Cullina Richter and Pinney. John led the firm, and Jay led the staff. She was bright, hard working, and proper. John expected things done right and Jay was happy to oblige. Her manner made it clear that she expected those around her to do things right, too. Jay was professional, but she also always was pleasant and cordial. She was a great lady.

My very favorite Aunt Jay story involves her house on Thompson Street in Glastonbury, a farm where she lived with Grandma Brennan and Uncle Robert. Jay was always one to have simply beautiful gardens wherever she lived; both vegetable and flower. She truly had quite a gift. I was a little girl when they lived in what was then an old, very rustic house with the narrowest , most shallow antique staircase (sans railing) which you ever saw, leading to this wonderful large bathroom with claw foot tub adorned with one of Jay’s hooked rugs and, by virtue of the artist who lived there, ‘Jackson Pollack’, paint-spattered walls.
I helped (as much as a little one can) put in her extensive vegetable garden. Jay had read that lady-bugs were quite beneficial in eating garden pests and found a place where one could order a ‘box of lady-bugs’. Indeed, these came in a rolled corrugated box, refrigerated. She opened the box in the kitchen and those little lady-bugs awoke to the warm air inside and started flying everywhere! I can still see and hear Aunt Jay who, with a ‘whoop’ grabbed the box and ran to the garden to release them!
