Dr. Yavner was one of the best professors I have ever encountered. I enjoyed taking Russian class with him at Central in the 1980s and tried to keep in touch from time to time. It was his inspiration in the Soviet Union that helped me eventually found the Center for Soviet-America Relations, now The Eurasia Center. His love of Soviet Art was also an inspiration...
Cheers and his spirit lives on.

Symond Yavener was an icon in my life as I attempted to copy many of his skills & talents in the language classroom. No one could ever be his double but one could try & emulate many of his attributes.
He was always an inspiration & one from whom anyone could be empowered with his charisma. As I was beginning my career 38 years ago, he sent me a very kind & upbeat letter; one from which I remember him stating that he would often dance to the rhythm of the bells.
I had seen him a bit at the end of my career for dinner & it was always a true pleasure; such a wealth of kindness, intelligence, wisdom & integrity. I was saddened that we lost contact & that he had moved to MN.
You will never be forgotten, my friend. Looking forward to searching for you when my call arrives, too.

in 2004 Symond traveled to Tucson to be the best man at my wedding. Here we are at the reception at Old Tucson Studios. Symond was always the life of the party.

This is the last photo that I took of Sym in Central Park. It captured his grace, dignity, and elegance. I will miss you Uncle Sym.

We are so very sorry for your loss. Please find comfort in God's sure promise of a resurrection as set forth in the Bible (Acts 24:15, John 5:28, 29). Those who are raised to life on a restored paradise earth will have the prospect of never again being subjected to misery, sickness, and death (Revelation 21:4). These and other comforting Bible verses and thoughts can be found at jw.org.

I am saddened to read about the passing of Symond Yavener. I was in his Russian language course at CCSU for two years in the early 1980s and went to the Soviet Union with him and his wife, Martha, in the summer of 1985. He was a wonderful teacher and the terrific tour of the USSR included visits to Moscow, Leningrad, Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara.
Due to his enthusiasm in the classroom and to his personalized trip, I was greatly motivated to develop a high school Russian History class at Farmington High School and to read extensively in Russian literature and history. My interest continues as I prepare and deliver lectures at libraries and retirement communities in the Hartford area. My specific interest is in the memoirs of survivors of the GULAG and in the testimonies of those persecuted in the Brezhnev era.
Dr. Yavener had a major impact of me--and through me, on the lives of others.

Dr. Yavener was my student teaching advisor, mentor and friend. I stayed in touch with him throughout the years until he moved to MN. He was an incredible teacher and helped me to be the best French teacher I could be. I admired him and will always be grateful to him. May he Rest In Peace now with his beloved Martha, his “rose”.

Dr. Yavener was my methodology professor at Central Connecticut. He was an incredible professor and role model. I have been teaching for 48 years and began a teaching career because of him.
