I had Mr. Wood for film class 1976, great guy enjoyed his class. I distinctly remember him showing us The Graduate. He told us that film resonated in his recollections of graduating college and the uncertainty that lied ahead for him. He was more of a friend than a teacher and I appreciated his ability to connect with students. He was a teacher of life experience. I learned things not found in text books and for that I feel very fortunate to have met him.

Rick was not just a colleague at EHHS. He was a mentor to a brand new teacher. He was my "dad" at work. He was a candy dispenser, always ready with a life saver (the mint ones). He was a smile at the end of a chaotic class that made me question my ability. He was a coach who taught so much more than the game of basketball. Rick was so much more than mere words can describe. I have missed him ever since I left teaching at EHHS, and I am heartbroken that he is gone - but I know he will always be a part of this world, a little piece of him in all those of us whose life he touched.

Mr Wood was my High School basketball coach for 3 years (1979 - 1982). I also took his Film English course as a senior at East Hartford High. High School was not a happy time for me. I was one of those kids who was sliding along with no real direction and little support at home. Mr Wood was one of the few teachers I had who genuinely cared that I came to class and tried my best on the basketball court. He made us all laugh and we all had great respect for him. I’m so very sorry for your loss.

I am so very sorry to hear this - Mr Wood was one of my all-time favorite teachers! He made English class fun, and he knew how to inspire his students. Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. When Lazarus died, Jesus “groaned in the spirit and became troubled,” and shortly afterward he “gave way to tears.” (John 11:33, 35) So, when someone we love dies, it does not show weakness to cry. God will wipe out every tear from our eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. (Revelation 21:4).May the God of love comfort the Wood family and friends

Mr. Wood was truly unforgettable. Even after graduating high school, there were times when I still thought about my freshman English teacher. He assigned my class a book called, “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” during the summer going into high school. I remember reading it in two days; it became my favorite and I’ve held onto the novel ever since. A few days ago, I started reading it again, and Mr. Wood crossed my mind. Now, hearing this sad news while finishing up the book he introduced me to that changed how I viewed life and my idea of heaven, it’s very saddening. My condolences to his family and friends. He really was a great teacher.

Never any issues, he had a great rapport with students and staff alike. I later learned that Rick was a career teacher EHHS which explained how well he did his job. Really easy to talk to and a "Guys guy" Later worked with him at Wethersfield HS . He will be missed and my condolences to his family.

I knew Rick since I was a toddler, when he was assistant basketball coach for my dad at EHHS and I ran around pretending to be a big cheerleader from the sidelines. Over the years he and Sue became great friends of our family, and seeing him on my visits home to New England after I grew up and moved West always reminded me how beautiful and strong friendships can remain over years and miles. There are so many more conversations I wish I could have had time to continue with Rick, about parenting, sports, politics, and teaching English. Those talks we did have, I will cherish forever, along with his warm smile and big heart. All my love to Sue and the family.
