Obituary of Sophia Maria Graus
Sophia Maria (Verdonck) Graus, 95, of Glastonbury, Connecticut passed away peacefully in her home on July 6, 2018, with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late William Henry Graus. Born on June 26, 1923 and raised in Maaseik, Belgium, she married William Henry Graus from Ohe en Laak, Netherlands in 1955. They had an opportunity to come to America with the Catholic Migration in February 1956, so they set sail and became proud Citizens of this great land the United States of America.
Working for Consolidated Cigar Corp brought them to Glastonbury the summer of 1967 where they settled and Sophia stayed home to raise their 5 children. Sophia eventually went to work for Quality Name Plate here in town. She was very active at St. Augustine Church when the family lived in South Glastonbury, with the Alter Guild; when they moved to Glastonbury they became members of St. Dunstan Church. She was an active member of the community, Grange and Elks Club. Sophia spent many years volunteering at the Clark House and so enjoyed her route delivering for Meals on Wheels.
Sophia loved working in the garden with her flowers. Her true passion was baking. She enjoyed making desserts for others and loved baking her cookies around the holidays. Her hands were also busy with knitting sweaters, scarves, mittens and socks to croqueting, needlepoint and ceramics. Sophia was devoted to her family, she was a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by 4 children and spouses: Ludy and Al Sprague of Glastonbury, Mary and Rob Rosi of San Diego, CA, Harry and Melinda Graus of Niantic, John Graus of East Hampton, grandchildren Shawn, Kyle, Jacob, Jacqueline, Rachel, Matt, Jeff, Jason and Brittney, great grandchildren Devyn, Annika, Aubree and Gavin.
Sophia was predeceased by her husband William Graus and her son Joseph Graus.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. Dunstan Church 1345 Manchester Road, Glastonbury. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Glastonbury,
