Helen and Michael Culligan lit a candle

Our mother Maura and her sister Helen Rooney met up with Helen Hughes and their US cousins on a back-packing trip around North America. They became firm, if widely dispersed friends, with regular phone calls, and cards for Christmas and family events. My brother Michael and I were very fortunate to meet Helen Hughes, whose mother Mary was the younger sister of our grandmother Annie Conlon, during one of her trips to Ireland. Mum and I also had the pleasure to visit Helen and the family on another trip to the States. Every time, Helen and her family were incredibly warm, kind, and welcoming to us as she was to all her near and distant relatives. We were initially introduced to her as Sheila and it was on one of our visits that she shared her delight in her dual first names. As one of the many Helens in the family, I was particularly touched that she gave me one of her jackets with our name embroidered on the back. I still have this, wear it regularly and fondly recall her when I wear it.
Our shared roots, the family homes in Ireland where our great grandparents lived and raised their family, remind us of our bonds which may be interrupted but not broken.
May God bless Helen and reunite her with her family that have passed before her and grant comfort to her friends and family that remain.
Deepest sympathy,
Helen and Michael Culligan, children of Maura Rooney, daughter of Michael Rooney and Annie Conlon.

God bless you, Mrs. Hughes. She is home, pain free, and reunited with her beloved husband. She was an incredible matriarch for her family and an inspiration in humanity and faith. Saying a prayer for the Hughes family and remembering all the great times on Cape / at her home in CT - she was / is such an incredible soul. Her faith no doubt carried her into everlasting life. Love you all.
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8
