Obituary of Arnold H. Higgins

Arnold H. Higgins, 88, of Glastonbury, beloved husband of the late Beverly (Tierney) Higgins, died on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.  Born in Hartford on June 25, 1936 to the late Douglas and Anna (Jones) Higgins, he was a lifelong resident of Glastonbury.  Growing up in town, during the summer Arnold worked in tobacco from planting to harvest and shined shoes at the Texaco station in the center of town. During the winters he would set up pins at the bowling alley on Main St. Over the weekends he and his friends would see movies at the Glastonbury Theatre on Hebron Ave., go to GHS basketball games, or watch boxing on the only TV in town at Richard’s Hardware. He and his friends also enjoyed watching cars at the post office and sneaking into the courthouse to watch trials. Arnold graduated from GHS in 1954 (the first class on Hubbard St.) and was in the US Army from 1955-1958. After basic training at Ft. Dix, he entered MP school at Ft. Gordon, GA and was stationed at Fort Lee, VA, which had a hometown feel. Arnold was then on the Glastonbury Police Department for 28 years, retiring in 1987. He continued afterwards working in Hartford as a Judicial Marshal for 24 years, retiring 2001. For many years Arnold has enjoyed going to the senior center for lunch and to hang out with friends. He is survived by his son, Scott Higgins, of Glastonbury, step-daughters Darlene Rykowski, of Rocky Hill, and Dawn Teirney, of Glastonbury, his daughter Mary Elizabeth Jedynak, and granddaughter, Tara, of Simsbury, step-grandchildren, Brian Rykowski (Hannah) and Jennifer MacPherson (Rob). As well as two very good friends, Susan Noga, of Glastonbury and, Charlene Chapman, of Troy, ME. Arnold was predeceased by his brother, Maj. Irving D. Higgins. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 17 at 10 am in Green Cemetery, Glastonbury.
