Obituary of Albert John Reid

Albert John Reid, 91, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2025, in Glastonbury, Connecticut. A devoted public servant, community member, and beloved family man. Albert lived a life marked by dedication, service, and generosity. Born on December 4, 1933, in Newark, New Jersey, Albert graduated from Buckeley High School in 1951. He pursued higher education at the University of Connecticut and later graduated from the Hartford Technical College. His academic pursuits laid the foundation for a long and impactful career in civil engineering. Albert dedicated 35 years to the Connecticut Department of Transportation, where he served with distinction as Office Manager of District One, Engineer of Construction until his retirement in 1989. His work contributed to the development and maintenance of vital infrastructure across the state – a legacy that continues to benefit countless residents. From 1956 to 1958 Albert proudly served his country in the United States Army as part of the 3rd Infantry Regiment – The Old Guard. During his military service, he was stationed in Washington, D.C., where he drove for the Pentagon. Albert's commitment to community extended far beyond his professional life. He was a proud Mason of 67 years, 3 times Past Master of Tuscan Lodge #126 Hartford Ct, later becoming Friendship Tuscan Lodge #145. He was also a beloved member of Putnam Lodge # 46.  He was deeply involved in charitable Masonic activities and served with distinction as secretary for Brotherhood in Action Manchester, CT. Because of Albert's pride in his Scottish heritage, he applied his talent to playing the bag pipes for the Sphinx Temple Highlanders Marching Band where he served as Chief for many years. His spiritual home was First Church of Christ, Congregational in Glastonbury. A faithful member since 1970, Albert sang in the church choir and maintained the music library for most of his church life. He also served as a Deacon. For an extraordinary span of 46 years, he cooked twice a month for the potpourri breakfast gathering – an act that exemplifies enduring generosity and love for fellowship. Albert's hobbies reflected both creativity and compassion. He was an avid woodworker and basket maker who found joy in crafting with his hands. One of his most cherished pastimes was building bicycles for charity – combining craftsmanship with altruism to bring happiness to others. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter Bethann Nieter and her husband Jeffrey, his son Scott Taylor Reid and his wife Terri; granddaughters Crystal Reid, Whitney Reid, Breianna Reid, and Jillian Nieter; and great granddaughter Aurea Hicks. Albert was predeceased by his beloved wife Corrinne Reid. A funeral service honoring Albert's life will be held on May 3, 2025 at 11:00 am at First Church of Christ Congregational located at 2183 Main Street, Glastonbury, CT 06033. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Al's memory to the Special Olympics Glastonbury via Tina Yenkner, 65 Spellman Point, East Hampton, CT 06424 or Shriners Children's Hospital via Shriners Children's New England Office of Philanthropy, 516 Carew Street Springfield, MA. 01104.
