Obituary of Madeline Smedick

Madeline C. (Islieb) (Guerra) Smedick, 82, of Colchester, beloved wife of the late Raymond Smedick passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2025.  Born in Hartford on November 12, 1942 to the late Clinton and Mary (Kowalski) Islieb, she grew up in Glastonbury. Madeline graduated from Bacon Academy in 1960.  She worked for the State of Connecticut in the emissions & toll booth departments.

She married Frederick W. Guerra in 1961, living with his parents during the time her husband was in the Army overseas. In 1963, she had her daughter Lori. Later they all enjoyed trips to various states. After Frederick and Madeline separated, she married Raymond Smedick and moved to Florida in 1995 returning to Colchester in 2014.

She loved sweets, hence the nickname “Cookie”. She was on a bowling league and won some trophies. She loved going to tag sales, lunch and puzzle-making weekly with her daughter, Lori. She also enjoyed gardening, doll collecting, bird watching, and going to the Colchester Senior Center.

Madeline leaves behind her daughter Lori Riley, and her husband, Michael, her grandchildren Craig Plourd, Ryan Riley, Brendan Riley, Cara Riley, great grandchildren, Lee, Alice, Logan, Rachel, Aidan, and Frankie. She is also survived by her siblings Gloria Anderson, Carol Dolinsky, Kay Kurzweil, and Margie Varni. She was predeceased by her husband Raymond Smedick and ex-husband Frederick Guerra. 

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 21st at 12 noon in Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury. Burial will follow in Green Cemetery, Glastonbury. Calling hours will be from 10am-12 noon prior to the service at the funeral home.
