Visiting today while remembering my friend. I had intended to post a photo of a recipe of Lorraine's for pavlova that I wrote on Caspers United Technology letterhead, (From the desk of C. J. Ultee). Alas I could not locate it in my collection of recipes. I make that dessert at least once a year and in addition to being delicious It recalls so many wonderful memories of my times spent with the Ultee family.
I also saw for the first time Karen's charming note to me. Thank you! and please say hi to Gary for me.
Since my last visit I have come into possession of Casper's copy of his doctoral dissertation, a book he contributed to, and his technical drawing tools. I thank Carol for that kind gesture; it meant so much to me.

I don't believe in things out of the ordinary, and yet while having my coffee this morning, unprompted by anything, I found myself thinking of Casper and visiting this site--and today is the one year anniversary of his departure. Just a coincidence,...but a comforting one.

Rob, thank you for sharing your beautiful memories. I was blessed to have Casper as my father-in-law. Today I was watching You Tube videos of my second favorite Chemist, Dr. James Tour at Rice. He reminds me of Casper so much that I had to pull up his obituary to connect with my memories of him. So touching to read your memories. God has blessed us both through that amazing man. My parents met Casper and Lorraine at Purdue, I believe, where they were also both working on their PhDs in physical chemistry. I think both families subsequently moved to Buffalo, New York, where the two families had children who played together. I have many photos of us starting out in cribs and playpens and moving to sandboxes. My folks never lost touch with the Ultees and fondly recalled memories through the years, but I had not seen that Casper passed away in 2021. I was going to reach out to let him know that my mother passed away on January 30, 2022. But I guess they have already had a fun reunion in heaven. Lifelong friends are rare and I know both my parents treasured this one.
My name is Emma Ward Morris, Curt and Charlotte Ward's eldest.

Emma, how sweet of you to reach out. I am Casper’s daughter-in-law through their youngest son, Gary. Like your parents, I treasured his friendship, and now my memories. Know that your mother and Casper are making new memories in eternal paradise. Karenultee@gmail.com

My last visit with Casper

I was fortunate to meet Casper Ultee at a young age, when I had no internal compass of my own. If I subtract his influence, I have no idea what my life would be like now. He was the first highly intelligent person I had met; multi-lingual (Dutch, German, English, French, and Latin I believe it was), with a seriousness of purpose regarding his scientific profession, wide-ranging and deep curiosity and expertise (nature generally, esp. botany, celestial navigation and sailing), and an enjoyment of family, nature, fishing, and mystery novels. Quietly resolved to follow in his direction I started from essentially zero to study chemistry, physics, and math. When I went off to school Casper gave me some of his old textbooks (which I still have), and seeing the subjects and his marginal notes encouraged me because I saw that he had once started at the beginning too. Years later I sent him a copy of my dissertation and only later did I realize that in the Dedication I had thanked my advisor, my wife, and some fellow grad students, but had bone-headedly omitted the person most responsible for my life’s direction. Fortunately, we kept in touch and visited in CT and DC and had two visits near the end of his life. On the second and longer visit we spoke at length and I told him in detail about his effect on my life and, even if it was soon forgotten, in that moment he understood and I hope and believe he was pleased.
