Obituary of Sperry E. Morway, Sr.

Sperry E. Morway, Jr., 85, of Glastonbury, beloved husband of the late Audrey (Drusbacky) Morway, died Sunday, January 24, 2016. He was born on December 12, 1930, to the late Sperry E., Sr. and Edith (Kinghorn) Morway. Sperry graduated from Glastonbury High School in 1948. He joined the Seabees in the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. Sperry was a retired member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local # 478. As a crane operator, his work defined Hartford’s skyline with the Gold Building, City Place, City Place II, the Civic Center’s second roof (following the original roof collapse in 1978), the Charter Oak Bridge and additions to Hartford and St. Francis Hospitals, among others. He also erected the steel for the Irish American Home in Glastonbury. He raced modified stock cars at Riverside Park and Waterford Speed Bowl, as well as all over New England. A self-taught welder, Sperry was known to many as the definitive expert on all things mechanical. Sperry is survived by his son, Thomas S. Morway and his wife Susan, of Glastonbury; his grandchildren, Carolyn Morway and her husband Robin Neri, of Brooklyn, NY; Sperry Morway of Glastonbury; Hayley Morway of Glastonbury, his brother David K. Morway of Glastonbury; his sister Janet M. Campbell, of East Hartford; his in-laws, Frances MacClain of Glastonbury; and Barbara Price, and her husband Jay, of East Hartford. He was predeceased by his son Christopher F. Morway. Calling hours will be held Saturday, January 30, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury.
