Obituary of Isabella Waters

Isabella Braidwood Waters, age 94, died at Middlesex Hospital on Saturday, June 25, 2011 following a brief illness. Isabella was born in Johnstone, Scotland in 1917, daughter of Robert Small and Sarah Dewar Small. In 1942, she joined the ATS division of the British Army and was subsequently posted to Washington, D.C. to work in the signals branch of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, where she remained until after VJ Day. In 1946, she married Leslie H. Bradshaw of New York City who died in 1949. Isabella then worked for the Belgian American Bank on Wall Street. While working in New York, Isabella met and married John P. Waters in 1956, and they later relocated to Glastonbury. While living in Glastonbury, Isabella became an active volunteer working for 10 years at the Hartford Rehabilitation Center and serving on its Women's Auxiliary. For 12 years, she worked at the Welles Turner Memorial Library, where she was a familiar face in the reference department. On retirement, Isabella became a volunteer at the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford and at the Village for Families and Children Thrift Shop in Glastonbury. Isabella was an active member of the Hill & Dale Garden Club. She played in several bridge clubs, including administering the Wednesday game at the Riverfront Community Center. In addition to her husband, John Waters, who died in 1984; Isabella was predeceased by her sister, Sarah C. Small OBE, who served in the British Foreign Office. She leaves two step daughters, Judith and Nancy (Aerie) in Maui, HI, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren as well as a small, close knit group of friends in Glastonbury. A memorial service will be celebrated on Thursday July 7, at 11am in the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 2183 Main St., Glastonbury.
