Obituary of Marion Gossling

After a six year battle with Alzheimer's disease, Marion H. Gossling died peacefully on Tuesday January 4, 2011. She was 88 years old. Marion was born on April 9, 1922 in Torrington, CT, daughter of the late Paul and Elizabeth Hochstein. She lived in the town of Bloomfield, CT for the last 56 years. She was a resident of Seabury Retirement Community at the time of her death. She graduated from Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1943 with an RN Degree. She was a head nurse at Hartford Hospital for several years. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Harry R. Gossling, past Chairman and co-founder of the department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut Medical School and Health Center in Farmington, CT. They were married for 56 years. Marion served on the auxiliary board of the Institute of Living in Hartford for many years. She also served on the board of directors of the Watkinson School in Hartford, CT and was made an honorary lifetime member of the board by the trustees. She was a strong supporter and volunteer of both the Wadsworth Atheneum and the Bushnell. She was a regular volunteer for the American Red Cross bloodmobile. She was a long-standing member of the Town and County Club in Hartford. Marion was a lifelong member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Bloomfield, CT. Marion traveled throughout the world with her husband but her most dear places were her home in Bloomfield and their home on Cape Cod by the ocean. Marion was the constant supporter and cheerleader for the many generations of Orthopedic residents attending the UCONN residency program over the years her husband was chairman of the department. She leaves behind daughter Susan Gossling Walters of White Hall, Maryland and her husband Chris; her son Paul L. Gossling and his wife the Reverend Nancy E. Gossling both of Glastonbury, CT. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Megan E. Gossling of Burlington VT, Brian P. Gossling of Manchester, CT, Madelynn P. Walters of White Hall, MD and Abigail E. Walters of White Hall, MD. There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Bloomfield at 10 am on Saturday, January 8, 2011. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Watkinson School Scholarship Fund, 180 Bloomfield Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105 or to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 590 Bloomfield Avenue, Bloomfield, CT 06002.
